Satan has disguised himself as an angel of light, so it makes sense that the deception he wages against humankind appears plausible and even attractive. Julius Agbor is an author, professor, economist, and pastor who offers outstanding insight into the nature of Satan’s most enticing deceptions. He is the author of Before the Rapture: The 7 Forms of Deception Each Christian Must Overcome. He says Jesus is coming back soon, and it will be sudden, dramatic, and unannounced. He discusses the seven deceptions Christians will encounter when it comes to discussions surrounding the impending rapture before Christ’s Second Coming. He also explains the difference between the Gospel of Christ and the Gospel of the Kingdom from scripture.

TAKEAWAYS
Some red flags associated with false teaching include a promotion of immorality and heretical doctrine
Deception has to be very close to the source for it be believable, so it can be hard to decipher
Idolatry, overconfidence, disloyalty, and pride are four of the seven deceptions Julius discusses in his book
One out of every eight New Testament Scriptures refers to the Second Coming of Christ

Would you give up everything you have in pursuit of a lie disguised as a truth? This question may seem simple, but masterful manipulation and deception can fool anybody. This is a harsh lesson Athena Dean Holtz learned after being deceived for 13 years by a false teacher who convinced her to leave her husband, her children, and even her thriving publishing business under the guise of biblical teaching. She was exposed to extreme spiritual abuse due to unprocessed trauma in her life, but when she broke free, she founded Redemption Press, where she now helps other women tell their redemption stories by providing teaching, coaching, publishing services, and more. Athena discusses how she was deceived, how she escaped such deception, and what red flags alerted her to the awful truth about what was really happening.

TAKEAWAYS
Athena knows what it’s like to feel like Job and literally lose everything
She believed she was following God’s will when she left her husband and children, but she was being deceived by false teaching
Athena identified Timothy Williams as the false teacher who massively destroyed her life and his church was ironically called ‘Sound Doctrine’
Sometimes, unprocessed trauma can make you vulnerable to being deceived

Put down the mirror of self-esteem and embrace a healthy dose of self-respect, says Jill Garner, founder of Manners of the Heart. Jill was trained to be an interior designer, but God had other plans. A volunteer project designed to help children learn manners, self-respect, and civility became - her lifelong ministry and labor of love - to educate the hearts of children. Jill discusses the difference between humanistic self-esteem and godly self-respect. How can we teach our children to serve others rather than constantly looking to love themselves or worship their own emotional desires? The sin of pride is very dangerous, and Satan has found a way to reframe it in our society to make it look “pretty”, but it is damaging nonetheless, and its self-serving doctrine infects many modern teachings of Christianity.

TAKEAWAYS
Humanism is completely counter to Christianity, and yet it’s been grafted into many modern Christian teachings
Our education system is filled with humanism
Christian life is about serving others
Fill your kids’ hearts with truth so that their minds open to see the world through a Biblical lens as Christ intended

If we want to defeat our enemy, we need to know our enemy’s moves, says Phil Hopper, a former SWAT cop now serving as the pastor of Abundant Life Church. Phil is also the author of Defeating the Enemy: Exposing and Overcoming the Strategies of Satan. With a background in law enforcement and street-smart survival tactics, Phil is well-equipped to take the spiritual battle against Satan head-on. He thrives on discussing the spiritual “bullets” Christians should be prepared to face in life. Why are so many believers living in mediocrity and depression? They are believing Satan’s lies. Why do they believe these lies? Chiefly because of biblical illiteracy, says Phil. Do not be ignorant of your adversary. Educate yourself by reading the Bible and understanding how the enemy works and learn how to protect yourself against the schemes of the Devil.

TAKEAWAYS
Humans are the only creatures created by God in His image and likeness
Satan was not created in the image of God, nor is he Jesus’s “spirit brother,” as the Mormons teach
Satan understood that to seal man’s spiritual fate, he needed to get them to sin
Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross redeems man from sin and brings him back into a relationship with God, thwarting Satan’s plans

Overcoming your deepest fears and achieving your goals doesn’t have to be scary. With God’s help, you can embrace the truth about yourself and take your challenges to Him! This is the wisdom Nicole Salmon brings to the topic of courage. As an author, speaker, and purpose alignment coach, she has journeyed from the struggles of single motherhood and faced her fears head-on with God’s help. Fear is slick, and it dresses itself up in many ways, she says. Sometimes, fear can even dress itself up to look like wisdom. Don’t be deceived. Fear is not from God! She advises Christians to be truthful with themselves and to take those concerns to the Lord. No matter what you face, there is a response you can offer to turn your fear into a win.

TAKEAWAYS
Create a Bible-anchored response to the fear narrative that replays in your head
Have honest conversations with God and stop lying to yourself about what’s going on and embrace truth
Take small, actionable steps toward your goals
More time procrastinating doesn’t alleviate fear; it feeds it

The place between two stops on a journey is not limbo; it’s rest, says Dawn Mann Sanders, an author and the associate minister at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. Dawn wrote When Your World Ends: God’s Creative Process For Rebuilding a Life. The book was inspired by the difficult challenges she has faced in life, from divorce to remarriage, miscarriages, and the sudden death of her beloved second husband. When life knocks you down, how will you respond? Anger, she explains, does not mean that you do not believe in God or that you don’t trust Him. It’s a natural emotion that comes in the wake of deep and tragic loss. After grappling with anger and feelings of betrayal, Dawn had to learn to forgive herself for holding a grudge against God, but she also had to learn how to move forward.

TAKEAWAYS
How do you start over from nothing? By rebuilding your relationship with God
God will meet us wherever we are, even in the darkness
God is hovering over us and will never abandon us, even if our emotions betray us
Wait until God moves, then follow as closely as you can as you move forward

The emerging adult years are ones of exploration and change, and it’s a period that greatly differentiates from the culture many parents grew up in. Jim Burns is an accomplished author, podcaster, and founder of HomeWord. He’s an excellent authority on parenting and discipleship, and he has wonderful insight into how parents can keep in touch with their adult children while maintaining their biblical values, and still show godly love even when they disagree with their children on critical issues. This new generation, Jim explains, has certain distinctions, and one of them is that they view tolerance as a form of loving others. “We have to learn to be students of their culture without agreeing with them,” he shares. He talks about the “messy middle” where we can still lead with love without affirming sin.

TAKEAWAYS
It’s okay to share your own life experiences with your kids to help prepare them for the consequences of bad life choices
Kids want to see authenticity from their parents
We can guide our children to choose the master designer of our sexuality instead of what the culture promotes
If we live with integrity, our kids will see that modeled and learn from it

Eun Strawser, the co-vocational lead pastor of Ma Ke Alo o in Hawaii, says discipleship that is not centered and strong in the church is ultimately a worship problem. Eun says Christians who meditate regularly on the Word of God should know what good discipleship looks like, but many Christians simply don’t disciple others very often. What is discipleship? It’s a form of imitating Jesus Himself and striving to be more like Him in every way. A Christian leader’s primary role should be as an imitator of Christ, and they should be setting that example for their flock. Eun also discusses four “key buckets” you should see Christlike maturity in a true believer: character, theology, wisdom, and missional living. These are all areas that need good discipleship and wisdom.

TAKEAWAYS
Our character should grow to be more Christlike over time as believers
As believers are discipled in Jesus, they should also embrace teachings that mirror His word rather than contradict it
Our self-centered society tends to think about receiving first and giving second and shifted as a culture from community living to individualism
The first part of discipleship is very clearly about imitating Christ

What does real-life discipleship look like? Terrie Hellard-Brown has the answer. After raising her young children on the mission field as a missionary pastor’s wife, she has had the opportunity to do life alongside people yearning to dig deep into the Word of God and grow their spiritual understanding. She says it’s never too late to disciple your children. She also discusses the biblical model of discipleship, which is so much more involved than just meeting once a week for a bible study. “We have made it into something that it was never intended to be,” she explains. She challenges people to live life together and ask authentic, real questions about their struggles and obstacles. Christians need to pray for each other and be authentic with each other and remember that first century discipleship is the antidote to failing 21st-century discipleship problems.

TAKEAWAYS
If you want to teach your children, you’ve got to stop and engage with them in teachable moments
We can’t correct each other if we’re not being honest with each other
No real Christians have ever lived a life devoid of suffering
Don’t create a fake reality - talk about the realities and struggles in life and pray for each other for God to give you peace and direction

Truth is not always comforting for someone to hear - but that doesn’t mean it’s not important to share it! Rick Thomas founded Life Over Coffee, a ministry dedicated to providing real encouragement that follows Jesus’s model of calling people to repentance without affirming their sins. As a speaker, writer, and podcaster, Rick’s passion for helping others was born after a lifetime of challenges and obstacles, including an abusive alcoholic father and death of two brothers, drove him to the foot of the cross. He has since dedicated his life to helping people overcome challenges with biblical encouragement and wisdom. His ministry provides content like discussion forums, curriculum, and free books. Rick brings encouragement by urging Christians to do life together and build each other up.

TAKEAWAYS
Biblical counseling is a subset of discipleship
The words “stir up” literally mean to “irritate”
God is a biblical and holy “irritant” who forces you to examine your own heart and soul
When your heart and God’s Word are on the same page, that’s a biblical sweet spot

Being a teenager can be overwhelming, but for Ashley Taylor, it was the beginning of a deep and confusing pain that she didn’t understand. When Ashley was younger, she engaged in self-harming practices that some may have trouble understanding. She explains that self-harm is an indication of pain in the heart and soul, and as a method kids use to try and escape their suffering. Parents should address it immediately without condemnation and take practical steps to protect their child and create an environment that cultivates healing. Ashley discusses the impact harmful media, particularly secular music, can have on a teenager’s psyche, and how self-harming has the same effect as a drug: teens will always chase the same high they got the first time they experienced it. Thankfully, Ashley heard about salvation through faith via Christian music.

TAKEAWAYS
Parents should be alert for signs of self-harm in their teens and maintain healthy communication with your kids at all times
Some signs include: wearing long sleeves in hot weather, being secretive, dressing differently, and finding sharp objects in their rooms
Lots of modern, secular music can trigger dark and depressing feelings
Most self-harmers will try to hide what they’re doing but simultaneously hope that someone will also find out and help them

Sometimes the most helpless feeling in the world is watching someone you love suffer, but thankfully, there are many ways we can minister to them in times of need and show the love of Christ. Christine Chappell has a lot of experience in this area. As a survivor of self-harm and other severe emotionally painful issues, she is now a Biblical counselor who encourages those who are suffering to engage with God amid emotional pain. Christine's struggles began during her senior year of high school when she was in a major car accident and her world turned upside down. She talks about the intrinsic importance of having friends and family who are there and sympathize rather than condemn or distance. Just addressing self-harm is not enough - parents must engage their children in loving conversation and create open lines of communication.

TAKEAWAYS
Cry out to the Lord in your distress and He will be faithful to you
Self-harm shouldn’t be a silent struggle
Self-harm is not merely an external problem, it is indicative of a deeper problem
Self-harm may be defined as a sort of unhealthy “self-soothing” behavior

More young people are harming themselves than ever before, and there has been a tragic increase on that front particularly among young females since 2009. It is this terrible problem that Shannon Perry is confronting head-on as a certified parenting instructor, counselor, speaker, and the founder of an incredible mother-daughter event, In Her Shoes. Shannon discusses the drivers behind self-harm, and how parents can be on the lookout for signs of self-harming behavior in their children. Most kids are just trying to feel something beyond the numbness of their emotional pain. She also talks about tactics teens may use to hide their self-harming techniques and what red flags parents can watch for to identify these issues. In addition, Shannon shares how we can lovingly but firmly provide a safe space and a healing environment for hurting kids.

TAKEAWAYS
Kids who suddenly begin self-isolating could be at risk for self-harm
There are many kinds of self-sabotaging behavior, and cutting is just one of them
Kids can’t relate to you until they know you’ve walked through similar struggles and you’re approachable
Self-harm is not about getting attention - it’s a cry for help that can easily lead to suicide

There’s an epidemic of self-loathing in society today when it comes to young people, and it manifests in terrible ways. So many kids misunderstand their identities and suffer from an extreme lack of self-worth, which results in bad habits like self-harm. Dave Glander is a former atheist who now proudly follows Christ, and he is an apologist with Reasons for Hope. He frequently teaches and preaches to youth and spearheads the life-changing Equip Retreat camp for kids, which helps young people learn how to live out their faith in Christ. Dave discusses the root core of the self harm epidemic stemming from a lack of understanding of their identities in Jesus Christ. Why do kids hurt themselves? Because they don’t see themselves as valued and loved as God does.

TAKEAWAYS
Self-harm comes out of a lack of understanding of who you are in Christ
Parents play a vital role in building their children’s self-esteem and sense of identity
Make time to be with your children, even if that means going without glamorous things which will free up the longer work week
Never underestimate the power of a loving, faith-based parental figure

How effective is a prayer? How can a prayer change and shape the lives of our children? Jodie Berndt is the proud mother of four, and after 40 years of marriage and the blessing of many grandchildren, she knows first-hand the importance of praying for her kids and waiting patiently in the moments between. As an author and Bible teacher, Jodie shares well-earned wisdom about praying daily for our children at every stage of life, whether they are toddlers, teens, or adults with families of their own. Praying is a form of acknowledging that we don’t have all the answers, she says. Prayer doesn’t have to be mysterious or inaccessible. Prayer is about having a relationship with the God of the universe and bringing our everyday life challenges and joys to Him. Let’s model this wonderful practice for our children!

TAKEAWAYS
It’s good for our kids to see us mess up and go to God to ask for forgiveness and guidance
God cares about everything in our lives, both the big and small details
Our children are never out of God’s sight or away from His protection
Check out Jodie’s book, Praying the Scriptures for Your Children: Discover How to Pray God’s Purpose for Their Lives

What’s the difference between assisting and enabling an adult child? Jill Savage has the answer! Jill is an author and marriage coach who discusses the encore season of parenthood: empty nesting! She describes the difference between the years of day-to-day child rearing and the season of life where children are grown and need to make their own decisions. Learn to lovingly and appropriately detach from the details and let your kids spread their wings! Empathize and validate their concerns, and share wisdom if they ask for it. Jill also talks about how important it is to base your self-worth and identity in Christ - not on how well your children are doing in their adult lives. Good communication is key to maintaining a solid relationship with your adult children.

TAKEAWAYS
As our children grow, we should solve their problems less and less as they become more independent
If you continue to solve problems for your child when they are adults, you’re enabling them
Don’t hesitate to help your adult kids during times of great need, but avoid controlling the situation
Make sure you are empathizing with your children before you comment on their situation

When a lifetime of raising children ends and the season of empty nesting begins, there are things to hold onto and things to let go of. Jill Savage is a prolific author and marriage coach, and she encourages parents to let go of three major things when their kids leave the home: expectations, traditions, and opinions. She explains in detail why each of these elements needs to be surrendered to the Lord, and how parents can navigate the drastic changes in life as their children begin to find their independence and start their own families. We will all have regrets as parents, but don’t let that deter you from building a flourishing life as you learn to build a different type of relationship with your new adult children!

TAKEAWAYS
We all struggle with guilt, but God can redeem the broken pieces
Regret means you can see something you didn’t see before
Allow your adult children the freedom and space to make decisions in their own lives and offer support if they ask for it
The Bible says that for everything there is a season: a time to let go, and a time to hold on

When our children are all grown up and living on their own, how do we deal with the challenges and changes of an empty nest? This is the burning question Charlotte Guest set out to answer as an empty nester herself, and it spurred the creation of her popular podcast, Empty Nest Guests. On her show, she invites guests aboard to discuss the trials of empty nest life, including marriage, travel, and even caring for elderly and aging parents. Charlotte encourages empty nesters to ask themselves every day what Jesus would do, and to be filled with His love daily. She also discusses the importance of serving others, whether it’s an aging member of the church or an overwhelmed young mother. Above all, keep Christ at the center of your home and the center of your marriage.

TAKEAWAYS
If you have an empty nest, plan date nights with your spouse regularly
Date your mate, pray together, and encourage your spouse daily
Don’t condemn your children - have conversations with them and lift them up
Sometimes it takes the help of a professional counselor to sift through empty nest challenges
