There are many reasons why kids bully others, but it’s not as cut-and-dried as you may think. Dr. Gregg Jantz is a psychologist, licensed mental health counselor, and author of more than 40 books. He is an expert on the subject of bullying, identifying where the behavior stems from, and how to firmly and courageously stand up to bullies in an appropriate manner. He also discusses the reasons why bullies often push others around, and how various homelife situations can impact these kids’ behavior. Gregg lays out a few excellent strategies for dealing with bullying, finding courage, and sending the proper signals for self-protection. “We do want to keep a tender heart and not grow hardened early on in our lives,” he shares.

Lynn Eldridge was raised in a household where bullying was deemed as ‘normal’ – and it was a damaging experience that negatively shaped her life for many years. “Bullying is a form of hurt or harm that is inflicted upon a person who can’t get it to stop, because they don’t have as much power as the bully,” says Judy French. Judy is the coordinator at PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in Los Angeles, California. She helps parents protect their children with sound advice and guidance and reminds them how important it is to work with the school district and respect school policies while simultaneously advocating for their children. Power struggles and structures at school are often hotbeds for bullying, and bullies themselves often push others around because of a lack of control in other areas of their lives. “We really want to think about what are the foundational elements of a healthier community,” Judy explains.
